i'm happy to announce i will be having a one day demonstration workshop "Lots of Layers" at Red Star Studios in Kansas City, MO on June 15th, 2013.

LOTS OF LAYERS: ACHIEVING DEPTH IN DESIGN
Participants will learn about a variety of surface decorating processes that happen before bisque firing with underglaze or slip: paper & vinyl stenciling and Thermofax and EZ Screens screen printing. They will also learn about surface decorating after glaze firing, using iron oxide transfer decals, china paint decals, and vinyl stencils.

holy moly! where did the month of february go?

when i got back from the Potters Council Surface + Form Conference, i hit the ground running....and it's been nonstop! FINALLY, i present a couple of pics from the workshop.

i demo'd using paper stenciling and thermofax screen printing with underglazes, as well as using iron oxide decals.the last part of the workshop was hand's on where the attendees were able to play around with applying vintage decals and versa color china paints.
all in all it was a fabulous weekend and i met some rad people. a big thanks to everyone at the Potters Council and Funke Fired Arts!

Learn How to Add Depth of Pattern to Your Work
Meredith will focus on her surface decorating process. Most all of her decoration happens before the bisque firing. This includes underglazes and slip for trailing, thermofax screen printing, and stencils. After the glaze firing, Meredith fires a third time with homemade iron oxide decals for one last layer. This process of adding multiple layers allow the work to have a depth of pattern and an intricate, complex surface. This method of multiple firing allows the work to be less precious and gives one an opportunity to play around with layering. It also provides an opportunity to reclaim or save a piece that is not to your liking by adding another layer of visual information.

it's hair flower time!

i have been a fan of victorian hair wreaths for awhile now. i first visited Leila's Hair Museum located in Independence, MO, about 5 yrs ago, and then again this past february in its new location.the museum is only a few rooms, but they are jammed packed full of an amazing hair work collection. i just signed up for the hair flower workshop given by leila herself (pictured above) to take place in a few weeks. !!!!!!!!
here are some detail shots of the hair flowers. (i am pretty sure the white hair is actually horse hair and not human.)
i am so very excited...i have been saving my brush hair for a few months now. i can't wait to update the blog with my very own hair flowers!
