KC STAR

the Kansas City Star has been good to me the past couple of weeks.

first up, an article about tattoos and art in the sunday (8.9.09) House & Home section...i'm not really a part of the article per say, but there's a pic of my tattooed arm with a foldedpigs Super Duper Cupcake Cup!
The Tattoo & The Place Mat
secondly, an article on the Pecha Kucha Night i participated in last month. The article from this sunday (8.16.09) starts out with a little description of my presentation...it says i'm funny! they like me, they really really like me!
Pecha Kucha Night: 6 min 40 sec

confectionary slaughterhouse

oh....my....god....
i saw this on a posted facebook link and KNEW i had to blog about it immediately. HUMAN BREAD!
Kittiwat Unarrom (Potharam, Thailand) is the mastermind behind this work.
"When people see the bread, they don't want to eat it. But when they taste it, it's just normal bread," he said. "The lesson is 'don't judge just by outer appearances."
i LOVE this.

Pecha Kucha Night #6

pecha kucha #6 was a rousing success! there was a blog post about it on the main pecah kucha website.
i was 3rd in the lineup of 9. my whole presentation was a whirlwind...i barely even remember being up there. turns out 6 min 40 sec goes by even quicker than you'd imagine... being blinded by a spotlight helped.

the crowd at cross town station.

the mouse turds look gigantic on a large screen.
you know i had to talk about horror movies!

PECHA KUCHA NIGHT

don't ask me how to pronounce it as i really am not sure, but i am participating in the Pecha Kucha: Kansas City #6 this Thursday July 16th at Crosstown Station. i'm billed as a ceramist/roller derby chick (they added the last part).
it's freeeeeeee!

i'm in a lineup of other presenters where we each give a slide presentation of 20 slides/20 seconds each. which makes a 6 min 40 sec presentation (did i do the math right?). more on it courtesy of the main Pecha Kucha website.

now i gotta get my presentation together.

east coast craft fair tour. RECAP!

well...i feel like a slacker...we've been back from the whirlwind trip out east for two weeks now. this week should be full of updates to make up for the non-posting weeks.
renegade was awesome: met a ton of people, picked up some nifty things, saw a lot of french bulldogs (which made me miss my little olive), forgot to eat due to being busy, attempted to avoid the sun...lusterbunny & foldedpigs were in a sweet lineup of vendors. nice neighbors indeed!
renegade was held at mccarrin park in brooklyn. i knew we were going to be set up around a track, but for some reason i didn't expect people to actually be using it. there were a ton of runners and numerous soccer games happening throughout the weekend. there were a few rogue soccer balls that managed to hit our booths. thankfully no damages.

it took a few days of recovery in philly. the week ended with Art for the Cash Poor at the Crane Arts building. after the long brooklyn weekend, it was awesome to be inside and have a quick easy one table set up. here was a quick snap of my table.
more to come regarding the week in philly. it was packed full of good times and sweet sites to see!

hittin' the road!

the car is packed and much to my surprise, i can actually see out of the back!

for the first time, we decided to rent tables for renegade and i think this was a good move...the tables apparently take up a ton of room in the car.
lesson learned during the monsoon of chicago renegade....pack everything in PLASTIC bins.

final destination: brooklyn
with a pit stop in columbus & philadelphia.

after brooklyn: back to philly for a week of fun and then Art for the Cash Poor next weekend.

east coast craft fair tour.

foldedpigs & lusterbunny are hittin' the road next week! we're heading out east for two super lovely craft fairs.

first up: June 6-7: Renegade Brooklyn!

my first time at this fair, and i'm really really excited.
(however, i'm not really excited to drive in nyc.)

second stop: June 13& 14th: Art for the Cash Poor, Philadelphia

i was at this show last year and am looking forward to it again!in preparation for the trip, lotsa little things need to be done...intern wanda & i tag teamed the gocco and printed shopping bags.

and of course...a whole lotta decaling is happening!departure is next wednesday...still a ton to do!

the studio dogs are not the greatest at helping, but they do win for being the cutest nappers.

the backside of the cards list all the directions for use.
mr. patrick sullivan designed these for me.

super duper cupcake cups!

i figured out that the cups i use for my foldedpigs line, are perfect for baking treats in! i baked two batches of funfetti cupcakes in the cups. then team intern and i did some heavy duty decorating!

before:decorating commences: paul figured out a sweet sprinkle stenciling system.
mariko became a pro at piping mini flowers:
some of the finished product!
the skull set...ready to serve!
after decorating mania, i did a little photo shoot. mr. patrick sullivan will be designing a kick ass promotional postcard for these bad boys.
i'll share once it's all done.

p.s. they were oh so yummy!

collections in kitchens.

i have been looking for a house to buy since january. i've looked at a ton online and a ton in person. i saved these two photos of someone's kitchen on my computer desktop about 2 months ago and decided to finally post about them. i never looked at the house (can't remember why) and unfortunately i can't tell you whose house this is (located somewhere in the kansas city vicinity).

the first thing that stood out was the red table and chairs...i have these too! but mine are sparkly red like a carnival ride. second the souviner plate collection.

i really do love the way the plates are displayed.
and the sheer number of them is appealing.i ended up finding a house this past week. it happened oh so quickly...saw the house around 11am, made another visit around 1pm. 2:30pm the offer was made and 3pm the offer was accepted! i am excited and freaked out at the same time. the kitchen is much different than this one, but i have already started to mentally plot out how to display my collections.

blackwell's thrift store: kcmo

jackpot! rain & paul introduced me to a gem of a "thrift store". it's really more of an antique housewares store.lord knows how much i like kitchen ware. it's pretty amazing...if you need an iron, there's a whole shelving unit fill of them. need a replacement yellow pyrex mixing bowl? there's a stack of 7! (i regret not taking pictures of the massive section of pyrex mixing bowls.)
here are the rolling pin & pots 'n pans sections.

jello molds!
the visit was a successful one. i found a sweet cake plate and metal tray that will show up in a photo shoot in the near future. stay tuned...

jesse small

this past friday i checked out jesse small's new work produced recently while he was in china. the work was moving on to new york for an exhibition.

window treatment with detail.

decal collage on ghosts.
the one on the right reminds me of the death star.

cut metal chandeliers. i'm digging the color.

stencils.

i'm currently working on a dinner plate set for some friends and took a couple pics of the stenciling process.
gotta love the crispness of paper stencils.

paper stencils placed on the plate. covered in underglaze. paper peeled off.

NKOTB

Rain Harris, Paul Donnelly, and myself had a show "New Kids on the Block" open at Red Star Studios this past week. the show will be up through march.

here are some images of the work in the show. some of my plates(stray hair & food residue) along with a mouse turd cup & saucer stack.
a flower brick made by paul. i love love love the yellow.
my pics of rain's work didn't turn out so well, so in replacement here's a studio photo of one of the represented pieces in the show.
rain, paul, and myself: hangin' tough.

just a side note: i was never a fan of new kids on the block musical group. i was more of a true blue debbie gibson kind of girl.

ps. happy F13
